A cruel, unnecessary – and illegal – practice

Banned in South Africa - June 2008

We humans don’t have the copyright on body language: dogs use their tails for communication. A tail that is wagging quickly indicates a happy, friendly dog, whilst a tail that is being aged stiffly slowly and deliberately indicates a warning that a dog is feeling threatened or unhappy, and that he may bite or attack.

All of which calls into question the archaic, barbaric and illegal but continuing practice of tail docking. Further research suggests that when dogs feel stress, they tend to wag their tails to the left as a reflection of what’s happening in the brain. Activation of the left-brain causes the tail to wag to the right, activation of the right brain produced a way to the left.

The research shows that dogs wag to the right side when they encounter something pleasant.  When they see something threatening, for example, a strange dog exhibiting dominant behaviours, they wag more to the left side.  These results suggest that dogs notice another dogs tail wagging and use the information to decide whether the dog with the wagging tail is friend or foe. The researchers concluded that dogs aren’t intentionally sending signals with their tails, but rather the tail wagging is a consequence of the inner working of the canine brain. Tail wagging behaviour results from the way in which different emotional signals activate different parts of a dog’s brain. WIthout a tail, a dog cannot communicate his emotions or intentions, making it more difficult for people and other dogs to know how a dog is likely to react in in a certain situation and may even lead to an increase in dog fights. Tails also assist with agility and balance.

Tail docking is the amputation of a dog’s tail at varying lengths to suit the recommendations of a breed standard. Coking involved the amputation of the puppy’s tail with a scalpel. Sometimes, rubber bands are used, although this method has never been used by veterinarians.  The cut goes through the skin, cartilage and bone. This procedure is usually performed without any anaesthetic or with a local anaesthetic at three to five days of age.  A small number of dogs are born naturally without a tail.

Tail docking, even if performed with local anaesthesia, causes pain and stress to young puppies. Recent research in pain management indicates clearly that puppies, even at a few day s of age have a full developed nervous system and a well-developed sense of pain. Sometimes, tail docking, results in serious complications such as bleeding. Infection and even the death of the puppy.

Tail docking does not provide any benefit to puppies. Traditionally, some breeders considered a docked tail necessary to fulfil the working functions of the dog. Today many working breeds are kept as house pets and only a small percentage are used for field work, which is a recreational activity for people and not an essential function. If dogs of breeds that are customarily docked are left with intact tails, they are not more likely to get tail injuries than dogs of other breeds. If a procedure that causes pain has no immediate or future benefit for the animal and may lead to complications, surely it is unnecessary and should not be performed?

Tail docking is a procedure that is carried out because people believe that that is how that dog should “look” so it merely satisfies a breed standard or a human notion of what that type of dog should look like.

Some owners say that a dog with a long tail causes problems by knocking down ornaments in the house – well try rearranging your décor.   OR don’t keep such a big dog.

The SA Veterinary Council does not condone the routine of tail docking of puppies for cosmetic purposed by veterinarians. Any veterinarian who docks a tail “unless for justifiable medical reasons”, will be liable for prosecution under the Animal Protections Aca (APA) NO 71 of 1962.

Veterinarians found guilty under this act will automatically be investigated for unprofessional conduct by the SAVC under the Veterinary and Para-Veterinary  Professions Act 1982.

SINCE THE REMOVAL OF THE TAIL OF A DOG OR PUPPY RESULTS IN PERMANENT LOSS OF (I.E.DAMAGE TO) A BODY PART, THE PROCEDURE OF REMOVING A HEALTHY TAILS IS CONSIDERED A FORM OF MAIMING.

Lay people are also liable to prosecution under the APA if maiming can be proved. This falls under the ambit of welfare organisations.

The NSPCA is opposed to the unnecessary mutilation of animals for cosmetic, sporting, entertainment or convenience purposes – including but not limited to tail-docking, ear-cropping, de-barking, de-clawing, and myotomy (cutting of muscle).

The NSPCA takes the identical standpoint relating to the various surgical mutilations of other species. It has long been the opinion of the NSPCA that tail docking (as well as any other form of mutilation) is a contravention of the Animal Protection Act Clause 2(1)a which states:

“Any person who overloads, overdrives, overrides, ill-treats, neglects, infuriates, tortures or maims or cruelly beats, kicks goads or terrifies any animal…… shall subject to the provisions of this Act and any other law, be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to  a fine …..  “Since the removal of the tail or a dog or puppy results in permanent loss of (i.e. damage to) a body part, the procedure of removing a healthy tails is considered a form of maiming.

According to the Kennel Union of South Africa (KUSA) none of their breed standards say that a dog’s tail must be cropped, but they rather say “tail customarily docked” or “tail traditionally docked”.

Dog owners may show their dogs with or without cropped tails.

Smallholders are encouraged not to buy puppies without tails and to insist that the breeder from whom they buy their dogs does not dock tails.

Rabies

Wednesday 28th September is World Rabies Day. It is estimated that worldwide at least 55 000 people die of rabies every year. Rabies cases in humans occur more commonly amongst children, the reasons being that approximately 40% of bite victims worldwide are children and children are commonly bitten in the face which means a much shorter incubation time for this deadly disease. The whole of South Africa is considered a Rabies endemic area and is unusual in the fact that we have both canine and sylvatic (wildlife) reservoirs for the disease.

What is Rabies?

Rabies is a preventable disease caused by a virus that is transmitted from animals to humans primarily via bite wounds and scratches. The rabies virus, present in the saliva of affected animals, infects the central nervous system and affects the brain causing paralysis and death. A human cannot contract rabies by touching or being bitten by healthy dogs and cats; and the virus cannot be transmitted through intact skin, so touching, petting or being close to animals is not a risk.

Animals in South Africa that are mostly responsible for human infection are dogs, black-backed jackals, yellow mongeese and bat-eared foxes; but cats, cattle, sheep and goats can also be affected.

What are the Symptoms of Rabies?

A rabies infected animal, sometimes also referred to as a rabid animal, most commonly will show behavioural and temperamental changes, e.g. tame animals becoming aggressive or wild animals losing their fear of humans, appearing to be tame. Other signs may include drooling, inability to swallow, muscle weakness, incoordination, seizures and biting at inanimate objects, disorientation and paralysis.

Symptoms in humans appear within two to twelve weeks after infection. These are initially flu-like, including fever, headache and fatigue, progressing to confusion, agitation, hallucination, anxiety, fear of water, delirium, paralysis, coma and death. Once an infected human starts showing signs of rabies, no treatment is possible and death will occur in two to ten days.

International organisations, such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), recommend that domestic animals should be vaccinated against rabies to prevent them from becoming infected with the rabies virus and transmitting rabies to humans. Vaccination of dogs and cats is the only effective way in which rabies can be controlled in these domestic species.

Puppies and kittens begin their rabies vaccines at 3 months of age, they need a booster at 7 months of age to be fully protected. To ensure they remain protected against this deadly disease they need regular booster vaccinations. Regulations state that it is compulsory to have dogs and cats vaccinated every three years against rabies. The vaccine used does not contain live rabies virus so is very safe but effective.

How can Rabies be Prevented?

As rabies causes death in humans following the onset of symptoms, the question should be how one can protect yourself, your family and your pets against rabies. The three most important steps are:

1. Have your dogs and cats vaccinated against rabies at least every three years.

2. Teach your children how to react around dogs in order to prevent dog bites:

  • Do not touch or pick up stray dogs, as their rabies vaccination status is unknown;
  • Always ask the owner before you pet a dog;
  • Keep their faces away from a dog's face;
  • Never bother a dog when it is eating, sleeping or with puppies;
  • Never bother a dog when it is in a car, behind a fence, or tied-up - even if it is a dog you know.

3. In the event of being bitten by a dog in a rabies outbreak area or suspected of having rabies:

  • Immediately wash the wound with soap and water or disinfectant for 10 minutes;
  • Immediately after washing the wound, go to your nearest clinic where rabies antiserum will be given and a course of vaccinations will be started. Being bitten by an animal with rabies will result in death unless preventative treatment is started immediately;
  • Report the bite to your nearest state veterinarian, animal health technician or private veterinarian.

Home Dental Care for Your Pet

When did you last look at your pet’s teeth? Are they stained and brown, are there lumps of tartar on the teeth, or are the gums looking red? Just imagine if you had not brushed your teeth for 8 years what a state your mouth would be in.

A scary 85% of pets over the age of three will have some degree of periodontal disease. Although dogs and cats do not suffer like us with cavities, they can get tartar build up, inflamed gums, gum recession, infection and tooth root abscesses. All good reasons to take better care of your pet's teeth.

It’s not just your pet’s mouth that can be affected by bad teeth; bacteria from the mouth can end up in the blood stream and affect the heart and other organs. A sore mouth can prevent your pet from eating, leading to anorexia, loss of weight and body condition.

If your pet’s mouth looks or smells scary, go to see your vet. A professional dental check-up is advisable before beginning home care. It may be necessary to book your pet in to the hospital for a full dental procedure; scale and polish and extraction of any damaged or diseased teeth. Allow at least seven days after a dental before starting any home dental care.

Home oral care can make a big difference to your pet’s comfort and health. There are several options, some more effective than others, but every little bit helps. No home dental care will remove tartar that has already built up on the teeth.

Toys and Treats

Simple things such as regular play with toys that have ropes, knobbles and ridges will have an abrasive action on the teeth while chewed, acting like a brush removing plaque. To entice chewing you can coat the toy with something tasty like a little marmite or peanut butter but even better would be pet tooth paste which is usually tasty. It is important that play time is supervised.

We all like to treat our pets and if you use the right treats it could be good for them too. Treats such as Greenies and Denta Deli will help with home dental care. These have to be of adequate size so they have to be chewed and not swallowed whole, and ideally they need to get one per day. Remember treats do contain calories so if you are treating daily you may need to reduce the amount of food being fed. It is important to remember that bones and ox hooves are not suitable treats; they are hard and can break the teeth.

Foods

Dry pet foods, especially the premium brands are formulated to keep the teeth as clean as they can, either by the way that they break when crunched or by a special digest sprayed, containing an anti-tartar poly-phosphate on the outside. Bigger kibbles are better as they must be chewed rather than swallowed whole. There are even specific dental care foods. For those that feed a cheaper brand or mix wet or human foods in their pet’s diet, they are likely to see quicker build- up of tartar.

Sprays, Gels, Rinses and Water Additives

There is a huge range of sprays, gels, rinses and water additives on the market for pet oral health care. Many of these are chlorhexidine based, which is safe for pets. The chlorhexidine binds with the surface of the teeth and gums and is gently released in to the mouth as an anti-plaque treatment. It can taste bitter and some pets will not accept it. Sprays and rinses are squirted in to the mouth daily. The gels are smeared on the teeth daily, allowing the tongue to spread it throughout the mouth. Water additives are added to drinking water every day. These can help prevent the build-up of tartar by reducing the amount of plaque formed.

Brushing

For those serious about their pet’s oral health, daily brushing is the best option. Whatever age your pet is, it is important to start slowly. Most dogs and some cats can be trained to accept teeth brushing.

You will need:

  • A relaxed pet (after a walk or play time when they are a little sleepy!)
  • Pet tooth paste, these are flavoured to make them more acceptable. Never use human tooth paste it contains foaming agents that pets should not swallow.
  • Pet toothbrush, a specific pet tooth brush with an angled head is the best option.

Allow your pet to taste the tooth paste, smear on a favourite chew toy or for cats, put a little on their foot so they can lick it off.

Get your pet used to having their mouth handled. Take this stage slowly; you don’t want to traumatise them or get yourself bitten. Gently hold their mouth closed and slide your finger up inside the side of their lip. If you can, gently rub your finger along the teeth and gums. You can add some of the tooth paste to your finger after a day or two.

It is only necessary to clean the outside (cheek side) of the teeth; the inside (tongue side) is cleaned with saliva. If you look at a dog with tartar on the teeth, it is almost 100% on the cheek side of the teeth.

To get them comfortable with this stage could take a week or two. Be gently persistent and give lots of praise and rewards.

When your pet is comfortable with your finger “cleaning” their cheek teeth, you can start with the brush. Don’t wave the brush around near their face; you can offer them a little tooth paste on it for them to lick off, just to introduce the brush. Do as you have been doing but this time gently introduce the brush where your finger was. Be careful to have control of the brush so you don’t jab it in. If you sense that brushing is painful for your pet, take them to their vet for a check-up before continuing as they may need professional dental care.

The angle of the brush allows you to get to the teeth you need to without putting excess pressure on the gums or teeth.

There are finger tooth brushes, a little abrasive sheath that fits over your finger. Although these can be useful for pets that won’t accept a toothbrush, there is a tendency to push too hard and damage the gums.

Puppy Potty Training
Bringing home a puppy is such an exciting time for any family, and house training is a vital part of teaching him the correct and incorrect places to use the toilet. It takes patience and a consistent schedule on the part of the owner in-order to get their new puppy potty trained.
  • Go out frequently. As puppies have small bladders they should be given the opportunity to go outside for a potty break frequently, preferably every 2 hours. This includes immediately after he wakes up, after he eats or drinks and after play sessions.
  • Praise your puppy. Everytime he successfully goes outside to “potty”, praise him for a job well done. Verbal praise or a treat immediately after your puppy finishes positively reinforces the correct behaviour.
  • Get into a Routine. As your puppy gets used to regular routines such as sleeping and eating, he will learn to expect certain activities at certain times of the day. A consistent potty schedule after each meal at the same time every day, will help him learn more quickly, and he may even alert you when it’s time to go out.

The Importance of Having your Pet Vaccinated
OUR THANKS TO ROGZ PET INSURANCE -  FOR KEEPING OUR READERS INFORMED
Your pet may be exposed to an infectious disease at any point in their life; vaccination is the best and least costly way of preventing disease.

Rogz Pet Insurance promotes responsible pet ownership and we contribute R550 per pet per policy year towards the cost of annual vaccinations and other Routine Care on Option C, so that you can do the best you can for your pet. We encourage owners to ensure that their pets’ vaccinations are up to date; according to the Rogz Pet Insurance Policy your pet, unless otherwise determined by your vet, must have been vaccinated or received a booster within the last 12 calendar months against the following diseases:
  • If your pet is a dog: Distemper, hepatitis, bordetella, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus.
  • If your pet is a cat: Feline Infectious Enteritis (Panleukopaenia), Calicivirus, Chlamydia and Feline Respiratory Complex.
In addition your pet, unless otherwise determined by your vet, must be vaccinated against diseases as required by legislation or advised by your vet. This includes Rabies.

How do vaccinations work?

When you vaccinate your dog or cat, their immune system produces antibodies. Antibodies fight against viruses/bacteria that cause disease. Vaccines prevent disease but cannot cure it. Your vet will do a clinical exam on your pet to ensure that he/she is healthy before vaccination. A healthy immune system is needed to produce adequate antibodies to fight disease.

As time passes, the amount of antibodies in the body decreases. Your pet needs to keep the antibody levels high by being vaccinated annually.

Puppies and kittens have immature immune systems and are vulnerable to disease. Nursing puppies and kittens receive antibodies from their mum’s milk. These antibodies can interfere with the vaccination and this is why your kitten/puppy needs multiple vaccines before moving onto the annual program.

Vaccination and Immunity

Once a vaccine is given, immunity is not immediate. It takes at least two weeks for the immune system to respond to the antigens in the vaccine. This is achieved by producing antibodies.

Does vaccination guarantee that my animals will not get sick? No.

1) Vaccination protects against the common strains of disease. There are strains in the environment which your pet can get that are not in the vaccine.

Defamation on Facebook and other Social Sites
By Fawzia Khan, Fawzia Kahn and Associates

The ease and speed by which information can be shared with others and indeed the world at large is nothing short of remarkable. It’s been said that there are more than one billion active Facebook users and over 500 million Twitter accounts. Many of these users and those who use other social network platforms such as LinkedIn, MySpace, Orkut, Tagged, My Life and many others, use their accounts to post comments, blogs, status reports and updates regarding what’s happening in their private lives and in the lives of others. Often these online public platforms are used on a daily basis, sometimes up to five or more times a day.

Having such amazing technology in our lives does however carry with it the potential to do serious harm and damage to others. If a comment, tweet or blog or the like is posted and it falsely injures the name and reputation of another person, it’s considered defamatory. Many people who communicate on these social network platforms may not realize how potentially dangerous it can be to not only post a defamatory comment or tweet on line, but to also indicate a “like it” post or to “re-tweet” the defamatory comment to others within their social network group. If a comment, considered defamatory, is made in any public domain, including on any blog or a forum, you could find yourself being sued for defamation.

The world is seeing a steady rise in the number of defamation cases emanating from these social media networks, and South Africa is off course no exception. Our courts appear to be mindful of the fact that technology is shaping how some legislation needs to be implemented. In the case of H v W, Judge Nigel Willis had this to say “ …The law has to take into account changing realities not only technologically but also socially or else it will lose credibility in the eyes of the people. Without credibility, law loses legitimacy. If law loses legitimacy, it loses acceptance. If it loses acceptance, it loses obedience. It is imperative that the courts respond appropriately to changing times, acting cautiously and with wisdom.” In fact the number of “online defamation” cases in my own practice has risen sharply over the past 18 months or so. I will, in future articles, endeavor to unpack a few of the defamation cases which came before the courts in South Africa. You will be able to gauge what criteria our courts use in deciding whether a particular comment, tweet, re-tweet or blog and the like, was defamatory or not and hopefully protect yourself from this potential minefield. Know your rights!

Importance of Vaccinating our Pets
One cannot stress enough the importance of vaccinating our pets. It is the only way to prevent our pets from contracting many serious diseases. By vaccinating from around 6 weeks of age, they build an immunity to contagious diseases such as Parvovirus (dogs) and Feline Panleukopenia (cats). This immunity ensures that not only are they protected from potentially fatal diseases, but they also curb the spread of these diseases to other animals and in the case of rabies, to humans too.
Why should i vaccinate my pet?
The cost of vaccinating your animal is by far cheaper than the cost of treating one of these diseases, some of which are incurable. Even in today's age of accessible information and modern veterinary medicine, veterinarians still see animals that are sick as a result of contagious diseases that could have been prevented if they had been vaccinated. Tragically these animals often fall victim to the disease or have to be euthanized as a result of the high costs involved in treating the disease and nursing them back to health.
How vaccinations work?
A vaccination is a pharmaceutical product made of antigenic material which stimulates the body’s immune system to develop protection against a pathogen (disease). A vaccination is not able to cause the disease itself as it has been modified, but they stimulate the body to produce antibodies (soldiers) against the pathogen causing disease. This prepares the body to fight the disease before it has ever been exposed to it and thus the body is able to fight much more effectively if and when it gets exposed.
When should i vaccinate my pet?
As a general rule, puppies and kittens are protected by their maternal immunity until about 6 and 8 weeks of age respectively. Animals that have not ingested colostrum or are older than this are not protected by maternal antibodies and thus are susceptible to catching many contagious diseases.
From 6 to 8 weeks old, puppies and kittens are vaccinated with the ‘core’ vaccines, to mount immunity against the most common and/or dangerous diseases.
For dogs, these include:
  • Distemper
  • Parvovirus
  • Parainfluenza
  • Adenovirus
  • Infectious hepatitis
For cats, these include:
  • Feline herpes
  • Calicivirus
  • Panleukopenia
  • Chlamydophila
From 3 months of age, animals are also vaccinated against Rabies. Rabies is a country controlled, highly contagious and fatal disease. Additionally, a more worrying fact is that rabies can be transmitted from animals to humans.
After the initial booster series of vaccinations, it is highly recommended to vaccinate your pets annually in order to ensure maintenance of their immunity.

Osteoarthritis in Pets
Just as in humans, as our pets grow older, so signs of aging start to creep into their everyday lives. One of the common ailments in older pets is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is defined as inflammation of a joint. In older animals, we classify it as degenerative joint disease or DJD, which is the permanent and progressive deterioration of the joint’s cartilage.
The common causes of osteoarthritis include:
  • degeneration of joints from everyday wear and tear
  • degeneration caused by trauma, injuries and some diseases
  • in younger animals it can develop from poor conformation or genetic factors e.g. hip and elbow dysplasia
Other factors predisposing an animal to osteoarthritis include poor diet, especially during the growing years, and being overweight. All these factors affect the amount and distribution of stress on the cartilage as well as the joint's ability to withstand it.
How do I know if my pet is suffering from osteoarthritis?
Clinical signs include:
  • struggling to get up or walk
  • decreased activity
  • change in gait
  • limping
  • pain on joint manipulation
  • decreased range of motion
  • muscle loss
Signs are often worse in the morning after a long period of inactivity, after exercise and in cooler weather. Clinical signs are often less noticeable in smaller sized pets.
If you have any doubts regarding this, see your vet without delay.

THE MOST DANGEROUS PET CHEW EVER: RAWHIDE!
How can one of the most popular chew sticks on the planet be so dangerous for your pets, you ask? I mean, most dogs chew on rawhide for hours on end, and not only does it keep them busy, but they seem to last forever.
Well if you understood what it took to make this toxic “raw” leather stick, you would quickly understand what the problem is.
Aside from the horror stories circulating all over social media these days, of pets needing emergency surgery after consuming rawhide, the majority of pet parents today, especially the newbies, believe that this chew is some sort of dried up meat stick. Let me debunk that myth right away!
A rawhide stick is not the by-product of the beef industry nor is it made of dehydrated meat. Rather, rawhide is the by-product of the “Leather Industry”, so theoretically it is a leather chew. Sounds awesome, right?
“Producing rawhide begins with the splitting of an animal hide, usually from cattle. The top grain is generally tanned and made into leather products, while the inner portion, in its “raw” state, goes to the dogs.”TheBark.com
So, how does this leather, which is conveniently rolled up into pretty shapes, actually get made into those rawhide chews?
Follow along my friends and I will enlighten you on how this hide travels through a leathery process where it transforms from hide to a not-so beautiful, colorful, chew stick. Here is a paraphrased tutorial that was explained by the whole dog journal several years back:
STEP 1: Normally, cattle hides are shipped from slaughterhouses to tanneries for processing. These hides are then treated with a chemical bath to help “preserve” the product during transport to help prevent spoilage.
(No one wants to purchase a black, spoiled rawhide stick!)
Once at the tannery: the hides are soaked and treated with either an ash-lye solution or a highly toxic recipe of sodium sulphide liming. This process will help strip the hair and fat that maybe attached to the hides themselves.
(No, no one wants to see a hairy hide…)
Next on this glorious journey, these hides are then treated with chemicals that help “puff” the hide, making it easier to split into layers.
The outer layer of the hide is used for goods like car seats, clothing, shoes, purses, etc. But, it’s the inner layer that is needed to make the rawhide. (Oh and other things like gelatin, cosmetics, and glue as well!)
STEP 2: Now that we have the inner layer of the hide, it’s time to go to the post-tannery stage! Hides are washed and whitened using a solution of hydrogen peroxide and/or bleach; this will also help remove the smell of the rotten or putrid leather. Bonus!
(Research also shows that other chemicals maybe used here to help the whitening process if the bleach isn’t strong enough.)
STEP 3: Now it’s time to make these whitened sheets of this “leathery by-product” look delicious! So, here is where the artistic painting process comes in.
“Basted, smoked, and decoratively tinted products might be any color (or odor) underneath the coating of (often artificial) dyes and flavors. They can even be painted with a coating of titanium oxide to make them appear white and pretty on the pet store shelves.” - whole-dog-journal.com
“…the Material Safety Data Sheet reveals a toxic confection containing the carcinogen FD&C Red 40, along with preservatives like sodium benzoate. But tracking the effects of chemical exposure is nearly impossible when it’s a matter of slow, low-dose poisoning.”– thebark.com
Ok, now that these hides have been painted, it’s time for the final process.
STEP 4: Getting it to last forever!
Because the FDA does not consider these chews to be food, really it’s a free for all when it comes to the manufacturers of these leather strips, and the products they may want to add to these chews, to get them to last forever. Any sort of glue can be added here to get these bad boys to never come apart.
When tested: Lead, arsenic, mercury, chromium salts, formaldehyde, and other toxic chemicals have been detected in raw hides. So it’s safe to say that any sort of glues can be used as well!
Finally, it’s time to package and attach all the glorious marketing labels to the product.
Check out the fine print warning that’s attached with some of these rawhides:
“Choking or blockages. If your dog swallows large pieces of rawhide, the rawhide can get stuck in the esophagus or other parts of the digestive tract. Sometimes, abdominal surgery is needed to remove them from the stomach or intestines. If it isn’t resolved, a blockage can lead to death.“
(Oh, how lovely…)
And there it is! It’s now ready to be shipped to store shelves where it can be purchased for our loving animal companions.
How do proactive veterinarians feel about these chews?
Here is world-renowned veterinarian Doctor Karen Becker's take on the matter:
“The name ‘rawhide’ is technically incorrect. A more accurate name would be processed-hide, because the skin isn’t raw at all. But the term “rawhide” has stuck.
Rawhide chews start out hard, but as your dog works the chew it becomes softer, and eventually he can unknot the knots on each end and the chew takes on the consistency of a slimy piece of taffy or bubble gum. And by that time your dog cannot stop working it -- it becomes almost addictive.
At this point, there’s no longer any dental benefit to the chew because it has turned soft and gooey, and, in fact, it has become a choking and intestinal obstruction hazard.“
P.S. Ready for the jaw dropper?
An investigation by Humane Society International stated in their report, “In a particularly grisly twist, the skins of brutally slaughtered dogs in Thailand are mixed with other bits of skin to produce rawhide chew toys for pet dogs. Manufacturers told investigators that these chew toys are regularly exported to and sold in U.S. stores.” – dogingtonpost.com
"An educated, informed and well-researched community of pet owners can only put more pressure on the pet food industry to be better! When pet owners know better, they will only do better!"

Adverse Effects

1) Hypersensitivity (the face will swell)
2) Anaphylaxis
3) Fever, lethargic, poor appetite
4) Eye discharge

If any of the above occur, contact your vet immediately.

Diseases against which your pets are vaccinated:

Dogs:

DHPPi
* Distemper virus (affects the nose, eyes and nervous system)
* Hepatitis virus (affects the liver in puppies)
* Para-influenza virus (lung disease)
* Parvo virus (causes severe gastro-enteritis and is highly fatal)

Kennel cough vaccine
* Bordetella bronchiseptica (causes kennel cough in dogs).

Dogs are given their first vaccination as a puppy and are boosted one month later. Your dog must then be vaccinated yearly. It is important for dogs who: walk in parks, go to kennels, go to dog parlours etc.

Dogs:

Rabies
Rabies is a deadly virus affecting the nervous system. It is law to have your pet vaccinated at least every 3 years.

Vaccination Schedule for puppies:

Puppy
* 6 to 8 weeks - DHPPi
* 3 months - DHPPi and Rabies
* 4 months - DHPPi and Rabies
* Annual boosters - DHPPi and Rabies

Vaccination is the single most effective method of protecting against infectious diseases in healthy animals. And remember to deworm your pets every 6 months.

HIGHLY TOXIC TO DOGS       Our thanks to the writer...
Xylitol is estimated to be 100 times as toxic as chocolate
to dogs

In both humans and dogs, the level of blood sugar is controlled by the release of insulin from the pancreas. Xylitol does not stimulate the release of insulin from the pancreas in humans. However, when non-primate species (e.g. a dog) eat something containing xylitol, the xylitol is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream.

The Biewer Terrier,  a busy bee and clown all rolled into one little fantastic pup and dog.
Biewer terriers, well here again, we have produced them in some pretty small sizes.
We started off by buying SA bred stock but changed our minds on that one.  We then decided to import from the States and have never looked back, not that we breed any of our dogs by the dozens, not the way we operate.  Purely, because of the quality pups we have bred, as a result of our importing our dogs and not,  from only one breeder either. All different blood lines and NO interbreeding either.
I am often asked how Biewers differ from Yorkies…. Personality wise, traits they have etc
.
Well for the person who wants the truth this is it ....
I tell it like it is, I do not believe in telling people what they want to hear or what benefits me as a breeder for them to hear either.
A biewer is not the quite, complacent dog SOME BREEDERS???? Have portrayed to the public.  It is a delightful, full of life, happy go lucky, in your face,  breed of dog.  Quiet, complacent???? NEVER.
Yorkies can be vocal at times, depends how they are raised, however a biewer terrier is far more vocal than any yorkie could ever be.
Again it all depends how you raise your dog, but be aware a  biewer terrier is a challenge to most folk.  It is full of life, never stops, on the go, will insist you do not ignore it,  no matter how much you may try to.
It is however a magic breed of dog.  A totally, devoted to your owner and family dog. Full of life so if you decide to purchase this little angel be aware, you need to keep it entertained, so plenty of toys, plenty of exercise, this is NO couch potato dog or pup.
I advise my clients that if they have Yorkies, have had Yorkies to realise this is a different energy level dog.
However,  go the route of owning and loving this breed of dog, it will be a very rewarding experience in years to come, but be ready for the challenge of owning and caring for an energetic little pup and dog.

Maintenance of the biewer terrier..
It is a high maintenance dog.  They should develop and I say SHOULD develop,  as this again depends on the quality of the dog at hand, very good coats. They do not shed coat, ideal dog for peole with allergy problems.
You cannot get something out of something that is not in it in the first place. What am I saying? If the parent dogs are inferior dogs, poor coats, short rough coats, long legs, long snouts, etc, you cannot expect the pup you purchase at a very GOOD (CHEAP) PRICE to be the Prince, instead they are often the frog.
Biewers Terriers have long coats or should have long shiny, flowing coats, again will depend on the quality of the dogs concerned.  Some will always have the edge on others,  but dogs with good overall quality,  are the only dogs that should be used in any breeding program.
These breeds need regular bathing and if that is not for you, a regular trip to the parlour is a must and daily grooming essential.  If you clip off your dogs, you still need to keep them clean and well maintained.
This is a house dog NOT an outside mutt.
YOU may be fortunate and buy a cheapie that is excellent BUT chances are quite good that your cheapie is not what you had in mind or what you wanted in the first place.  Cheap Biewer Terriers are not the real deal or are inferior quality animals.
We have produced them in pretty small sizes.

Did you know????
How to medicate your pet the correct way……

Always make sure you understand what you are to give your pet, how you should give it and when to give it, before you leave the veterinary surgery. Always ask again if you are not sure about the instructions.
If a vet says "Give twice daily" he or she means every 12 hours, likewise once daily means every 24 hours and three times daily means every 8 hours throughout the day.
Never stop a course of medication early, even if your pet seems totally recovered. Many medicines, especially antibiotics, need to be given for several days to work properly.
If you miss a dose, don't automatically try to "catch up" by giving more next time, this could overdose your pet! Phone your surgery and ask what you should do.
Get advice or a demonstration from your vet on how to give tablets. Some animals take them very easily, others require a bit more coercion. Cats especially are notorious for being difficult to tablet.

CONTRACTS OF SALE AND CLUBS???
Purchasing a quality pup in this day and age is quite an expense.  In a good majority of cases dogs are sold with a contract of sale. The contract entered into between the purchaser and breeder of that pup. Verbal contracts are also binding, again should not be interfered with by a club.
You pay for your pup, you either purchased this pup for breeding purposes or as a pet.  You are told this pup is registered and in due course (once you have fulfilled the conditions of sale etc in that contract) you then await your paperwork.  Paperwork from any club – anywhere in the world should have a section marked change of ownership details – there should be NO hesitation in the breeders supplying you with the pedigree with this section completed.
Please be aware that a club has NO right to change the conditions of sale of any pup made between the breeder and the purchaser.  If your pedigree does not have a section for change of ownership, quiery this immediately on receipt.  If a club thinks they have the right to interfere in sales after conclusion of the sale, then that should be brought to the purchasers attention prior to parting with their money and taking ownership of the pup in question and most definitely before concluding any transaction or sale.  However this is actually UNHEARD OF.    NO club has the right to dictate terms and conditions of any sale of a pup that has been concluded between a buyer and a seller.  They may comment or have an issue where something has been done that is totally against the rules or unethical breeding has taken place.
If this has happened to you, speak out, a club is there to assist, to educate and to register puppies and produce pedigrees etc. NOT to manipulate, dictate and make up rulings as they go along, that should not even exist, in fact DO NOT EXIST in any other countries.

YOUR questions answered...
Do the biewer terriers in South Africa suffer with Liver shunt as the yorkies do?
I have not heard of this happening in SA but that does not mean it is not happening here. I do know overseas some biewers do sit with this health problem

Should biewer terrier pups have floppy ears?
I believe this would depend on the size of the pup. However having said that, the dogs we imported NEVER had drop ears not even as young pups and they are not tiny dogs.  Our pups have always had upright ears from birth.  We see it with bigger yorkie pups however the ears are sometimes down for quite a while and then only start to come up. the smaller sized pups have upright ears from birth,

Subject: RE: Biewer Terriers

HI xxxxx
Thank you for your interest in the biewer terrier. Our biewers are not biewer yorkies, they are proper biewer terriers. Our dogs we breed with and intend breeding from, are all pure bred biewers meaning for at least the last 5 generations there is no yorkie in their breeding. The Biewer originated from yorkies way back in 1984 but they have come a long way since that time, if they have been in the hands of the breeders who have gone to great lengths to purify this breed.

There are a lot of sharks out there regarding this breed. Asking very fancy prices for splitter bred dogs. By this we mean dogs originating from yorkies etc. If this is the case the dog is not worth anything like the asking price in most cases. It is also known in recent times that certain breeders are selling off yorkshire terrier pups carrying this gene. This is actually totally unacceptable as in time to come this will also affect the yorkies in this country. Both breeds will be greatly affected and most breeds will end up useless as a result of indiscriminate breeding.

At present there is a legal investigation into the above allegations pending. All I can advise you is simply ask for proof of your dogs/pups registration with KUSA prior to purchasing this breed of pup, it is the only way to guarantee your pup is a pure bred biewer terrier.

If you do proceed with your interest in this breed and need further assistance do not hesitate in contacting me.

Kind regards
Joyce

Your questions answered..... questions received via phone, this website, our yorkie website and email....
What is the proper weight for the biewer terrier? I have been told that really small biewer terriers are not acceptable and will not be accepted. Please advise. If you want to show biewers then there is going to be a recommended or suggested weight for a show dog as is the case with the Yorkshire terrier breed. However, overseas the Biewer is available in different sizes and I am pretty sure it will only be a matter of time till this happens in this country. It is obvious that if you are on the market for a show dog, you would buy the larger sized biewer but here again, there are some major big biewers our there which most certainly would not qualify as show dogs.
I am very interested in buying a pair of biewer terriers for breeding purposes ¢€€œ preferably adults. You would have to make enquiries with the breeders. We do not sell for breeding purposes.
I purchased a biewer puppy sometime ago, I was advised what the pup would grow up to look like, the pup is now an adult dog, very disappointing result as an adult. Nothing like I was promised when purchased. Do you possibly have a pup for me as a pet that will grow up to be what it is meant to be - understandably I am now extremely cautious. You are welcome to contact me later this year we should have pups born then. What has possibly happened in your case, breeders in all probability will grade their pups, breeding, show quality, pet quality. If you specifically asked for a pet dog, you got what you asked for. MOST breeders pet quality dogs are going to be pet quality, not going to be cream of the crop pups. In our case we sell all our pups as pets, so show quality, breeding quality etc will be sold as pets. We have gone out of our way to purchase top quality biewer terriers so that to the best of our ability the majority of our pups will be good quality dogs. This is a developing breed so I do believe unfortunately the odd UGLY duckling may just pitch up in amongst the swans. In future make it known to your breeder that you only want the dog as a pet but would prefer a pup of breeding or show quality.
Where can I find a cheap Biewer Terrier?- You will have to phone around. We do not go out of our way to sell cheap dogs, we do our best to breed with quality dogs, that produce quality pups. Our dogs are all sold as pets but in the majority of cases they are NOT pet quality dogs.
Is a biewer terrier a suitable dog for an 8 year old child? My friend has a yorkie and she bites my child all the time, my friend has no children. I would say a biewer is a fine pet for a child, as is a yorkie, obviously not the tiny sized dogs for young children. A dog behaves how it is taught to behave. Your friend does not have children, so chances are that her yorkie feels insecure with your daughter around. Purchase either breed as a childs companion, bearing in mind that you the parent are always the caregiver for the pup/dog in question and that you will ensure at all times your child acts responsibly around the pup/dog and knows how to treat a pup or dog. Don't be tempted to buy the smaller sized dogs, not at all suitable for a child.
I am in love with the look of the biewer terrier. I had a yorkie many moons ago and I did not like the constant grooming, is the biewer shorter coated or is the coat more manageable? The biewer terrier has every bit as long a coat as the yorkie. Our own biewers have unbelievable soft flowing coats. The coats do need regular grooming as does the yorkies coat. If you are not one to groom, don„¢t buy a long coated dog or alternatively, arrange for the dog to be groomed weekly at a parlour.

My friend recently purchased a biewer puppy it is just the cutest pup of all. I have one question, this pup is very, very bony and very skinny is this normal for the breed? No not at all, in fact, our biewers are built like tanks, very solid dogs. Advise your friend to let her vet check over the pup, it possibly needs worming or it may not be eating enough.
I have a yorkie male of three years of age. I would love a biewer, male or female? What would you suggest?Either is fine provided you sterilise your dogs. An entire male could cause a hiccup with another male once that male starts maturing. If your dog is not sterilised as yet, good idea to do it now. If you do purchase another male pup which grows up with your yorkie boy and you now neuter your yorkie male, you then neuter the new pup at around six months of age and by the time the youngster is older and mature, you will not hit a problem. You will need to sterilise a female biewer for obvious reasons, if you have an entire male yorkie. All pet dogs should be sterilised.
I have just returned to SA after having lived in England for the last 9 years. I suffer with allergies and when I left SA I left my yorkie with my Mom. She passed away from old age a few years back. I would like to know if the Biewer Terrier would also be suited to me as was the yorkie bearing in mind that I am very allergic.I am pretty sure the Biewer would be equally okay as the yorkie was, they are both non-shedding dogs.
My wife just wants a biewer terrier after visiting your site. I personally want a Jack Russell. She wants the cuddly lap dog, I want the cheeky, explorer. Please advise the pros and cons. Well a Jack Russell is a cute dog, very different in temperament to a Biewer, it is also a dog that sheds coat, whereas a biewer terrier does not shed coat. One point to your wife. I personally would not keep a Jack Russell with my own pets, can be very excitable and very energetic, can be obnoxious to other animals, the biewer gets on with all other animals. Another point to your wife. No honestly, they are very different dogs. I recently had a rescued, badly abused Jack Russell that did a lot of damage to an ostrich of mine, of all things an ostrich. No biewer terrier would consider going after an ostrich possibly the third point to your wife. Best of luck, may you decide on the breed most suited to you both.

Subject: Re Our four legged children sent from heaven

Hi Joyce,
Thanks again for your most interesting and informative news letter. I always, once a week read your site and then I know I am up to date with the latest about my children.
As you know we have 4 yorkies, one standard and 3 pockets and they are our children. We have two legged children, grown up and then our babies!!!!!! I dont know who loves
them most, me, my hubby or my son. I also cannot imagine a life without a dog, must be so empty and boring!!!!!! One must definetly not have an animal if you cannot afford it.
They also enjoy luxuries eg. underfloor heating in winter, nice warm mohair blankies, lots of love and special treats often! I am very blessed to say that I have the priviledge of
caring for my children. I love them to bits and each one has their own personality. We grew up with dogs but not in bed or enjoying any luxuries! Very much sleeping under the zink
on an old blanket and getting a good hiding when having a mistake on the carpet!
My heart crumbles when I think about it! The more attention they get, the more human they become - understanding what you are telling them and reacting accordingly.
They all sleep in bed with us, some like to be tucked in and others want to lie tight next to you. I have a chinese lady who is my patient. I told her about my dogs. She says she has a
friend who is alone, no husband. She works for the SPCA and has 11 adopted dogs. She says when dog is ill-treated, she sleep with dog in bed, dog become better!!!!!!!!!
I have to congratulate you on your outstanding Biewer Terriers, they are just toooooo beautiful and that baby is to die for!!!!! The cutest thingoozing with personality, cant wait for
mine!!!!!!!!!
Thanks again Joyce, you sure make a difference to a yorkie owners life
God Bless, Love Inge

ENQUIRIES RECEIVED BY MIJOY BIEWER TERRIERS....
We have asked a Professional to explain more in depth about DNA and DNA profiling as there seems to be a bit of a question mark over what the purpose is of doing this, what it actually achieves and what it is used for in breeding programs and practices.
I think it is now pretty clear that DNA and DNA Profiling, does NOT cover purity of a breed or refer to a specific breed. It covers the parents of a particular progeny be it a human, animal, dog whatever. However please read the article written for us by a Professional will give you a much better idea and there will be no grey areas left, that you could have had questions about.
Mandatory DNA testing, how important is this, asked by a visitor to our site?
Well I would say major important. The Biewer Terrier is a developing breed and I think it is major important that foundation stock to any breeding program be of the highest quality possible and breeders should look to improving the breed and not to seeing how many dogs they can turn out, irrespective of the quality of such dogs.
DNA testing on pups is a brilliant idea for breeders to ensure what they breed or what they buy from breeders or what they sell to breeders is in fact what it is said to be on paper. This is the purpose to DNA testing, to ensure x puppy comes from sire a and dam b. If there is any chance of a pup having a different father to what the breeder thinks, dna should be done for pups that are being sold for breeding, there should be NO question about that.
Dna is also very useful should you have to prove ownership of a particular dog, in the case of theft or a lost dog.
We then come to the purity of the breed something else you mentioned. There is only one test that can determine this and it is a Mars test. We have got some information on this on our site but will be putting on more in the not too distant future.
As I have said before it is a prerequisite by the Biewer Club in America before they will accept any Biewer Terrier puppy/dog/etc for registration irrespective of who bred the dog, or which country it was bred in etc, that the said dog has been tested and passed the test proving it is a pure bred dog.
Best of luck and let me know if you need any more info along the line.

Thank you for your enquiries regarding the MARS TESTING
Here is a write up on Mars testing.

Below info was first released in 2009

BIEWER TERRIER BREED FANCIERS
THIS IS FOR YOU
DNA AND DNA PROFILING.......
Read two extracts taken from the internet below.
HOWEVER in plain English, DNA and DNA PROFILING does NOT determine a breed type as stated in the second extract.
DNA is most useful in proving ownership of your dog, proving your dog comes from the parents it is claimed to be progeny from on your pedigree. Useful if your breed of dog is a breed know to carry certain diseases that are hereditary and by dna testing and following through with additional tests, you will know if your dog is carrying the gene for its offspring to inherit such diseases. Most useful.
DNA testing is also used by breeders if they are uncertain as to who the father is of a specific litter of pups.
DNA Profiling (extract from the AKC - America)
Identification
The DNA profile is the ultimate in individual identification and offers a 'tamper-proof' means of identity. The profile need only be produced once and the DNA sample used to produce it can be stored as a permanent DNA record throughout the dog's life. Identification could be essential in a number of instances. For example, the availability of a profile could be used to identify an animal that may have been lost or stolen, and subsequently recovered. The profile could also be used to check the authenticity of a DNA sample being used to screen for the presence of disease-causing genes. Many such tests are being developed and it would be invaluable to be able to verify that the correct dog's DNA is being tested for the presence of the deleterious gene. Repeating the DNA profile on the same sample of DNA being used to carry out the gene test would be straightforward and prove conclusively that the correct animal is being tested.
Please note: DNA profiles are not instantaneous, so it is worthwhilemicrochippingyour dog in addition. They also do not give information on the disease status.
Parentage/pedigree analysis
Provided that the DNA profiles of both parents are available, pups in a litter can be profiled and their profiles checked with their parents' profile to verify that the correct parents have been registered.

DNA Profiling and Parentage Analysis
(extract from the ANIMAL GENETICS incorporated)

Canine DNA Profiling
DNA Profiling, also known as "DNA Fingerprinting" or "Genotyping" establishes a genetic code for individual dogs of every breed. This test does not determine breed type, rather, it identifies specific gene markers that are inherited from both parents.
Animal Genetics currently offers the ISAG (International Society for Animal Genetics) standard panel, which consists of 18 STR markers. This panel identifies highly polymorphic markers to determine the most informative genetic code for any dog. The DNA profile of a dog consists of two alleles for each marker, one that was inherited from the mother, and one that was inherited from the father.
Canine DNA profiling is a useful tool to accurately identify your dog, particularly in case a dog is stolen, or to prove parentage.

Parentage Analysis
DNA Profiling is an efficient and extremely accurate way of proving parentage as well. In cases where the sire of a litter is uncertain, the DNA profiles of the mother, father, and offspring can be compared. Any alleles that are present in the offspring that did not come from either parent can exclude the parent/offspring relationship.
Parentage Analysis can also be used to prove parentage for the purpose of clearing the puppies from genetic diseases. If both parents test negative, or "clear" for any genetic disorder, and the DNA profiles from the parents and the offspring match, it can be said that the offspring is "clear by parentage." Because both parents do not possess the mutation, and parentage has been verified, there is no way the puppies could inherit that mutation.

YOU MAY NOW SAY THIS IS ALL WELL AND GOOD BUT HOW DO I KNOW MY DOG IS IN FACT A PURE BRED BREED. THIS IS A VERY GOOD QUESTION ESPECIALLY IN DEVELOPING BREEDS SUCH AS THE BIEWER TERRIER. THE ONLY TEST WORLD WIDE THAT CAN ESTABLISH PURITY OF YOUR DOG IS KNOWN AS A MARS TEST.
Used extensively in America, this test is required by the MOTHER CLUB FOR BIEWER TERRIERS IN THE STATES.

Developing a New Breed
I am compelled to write this paper because there seems to be so much confusion about our wonderful Biewer Terriers coloring and conformation. What should be used for breeding and what we should put in the show ring? Is this bite acceptable?, Are these ears ok?, How big is too big?, Is there enough black/blue on the back and face?, Is that tail curled over the back enough?, and so on, are just some of the questions being asked.
I am constantly told that so and so should not breed their dog because it is ugly, or it's too big or too small, or it doesn't have enough black/blue on it, or the ears are too big, the hair is bad, etc.. First of all, that old saying, Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder holds true in breeding also. I may think a dog is beautiful and you may think it is ugly. Who's right? I'll tell you, BOTH. Thats why we have a standard, a description of a dog that we should be to breeding too.
I would like to start with saying that this is a new breed and it is nowhere near perfection. I am going to go out on a limb and say that this breed has only been in existence since 2004 when we started importing from Germany. As we found out, the story that we received with the dogs was not the truth. Many pedigrees were falsified purposely by the person that sold the dog and some were falsified before a particular breeder received their breeding dogs. Either way we have a bunch of false documents that we will have to use for lack of correct documentation. This is why I quit putting so much importance on pedigree research, as is normal in breeding.
That being said, we have a lot of work to do to produce dogs that will breed true every time we have a litter. This is done by keeping the best back from a litter, working with each other and keeping an OPEN mind about your breeding program. There is a difference between show and breeding dogs. If a dog has a white back with a black spot on its side, it will not do well in the show ring. The white will grow out and cover up the black which will give the appearance of a solid white dog. This dog will be fine for breeding, but will end up losing in the show ring against other correctly colored dogs. If you have a dog with big ears, breed with someone that has small ears. If the dog is predominantly white, breed to a predominantly black dog. We have no disqualifications at this point, so all dogs can show, but many would be better off just being a breeding dog.
Getting dogs that completely fit the standard is going to take a while, so do not take offense when another breeder tells you that your dog needs more color, the ears are too big, the body or legs are long, and so on. Do not try to fix all the problems at once either. You may have to work on conformation first and when you have accomplished that, move onto the next issue you may have with your dogs. I personally worked on my conformation first, then my ears and now my coloring. I have my black staying black, plenty of coloring on the backs and now I need to get more brown in the face. The reason I worked on conformation first is because it is the hardest to get perfect. Coloring can change in one breeding so I saved it for the last. Don't get me wrong, I worked on the other issues also, but concentrated on one thing at a time.
Just remember, we have a new breed and it is going to take time to get the Biewer Terrier to that perfected state. The Yorkshire Terrier went through many changes before the look that we have today became perfected. Keep an open mind and look for people to work with in establishing a good solid breed program.

HOW DID MIJOY BECOME INVOLVED WITH THE BIEWER TERRIER BREED?

THE BIEWER TERRIER
Written by Gayle Pruett and Myrna Torres

With the introduction of the Biewer to America in 2003, there has been much speculation about its heritage.Mr. and Mrs. Biewer had been raising and showing Yorkies for 20 years, when on January 20th, 1984 the first blue, white and gold Yorkie named Schneeflocken von Friedheck, was born to 1981 Dortmund Junior Champion Darling von Friedheck and 1981 Dortmund World Champion, Fru Fru von Friedheck. This was the startof what is known as the Biewer Terrier Breed.

Mr. and Mrs. Biewer„¢s Yorkshire Terriers that produced the black and white Yorkies, came from the Streamglen Kennels. There is some speculation, although not substantiated, that an accidental crossbreeding may have occurred in this kennel that did not show up until some generations later through Mr. Biewer's dogs. They had four Yorkies from the Streamglen Kennels, two of which produced the black and white colored dogs.

The ACH (Allgemeiner Club der Hundefreunde Deutschland e.V.) was
the first club to accept them as a distinct and separate breed. The dogs were then registered as Biewer Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pon.

In 1989 when Mr. Biewer signed the standard for this wonderful new breed, it
was that of the Yorkshire Terrier with the coloring being White-Blue-Gold. Mr. Biewer was not a man of many words, so the standard was short and brief. Since then the BTCA has revised the standard with the approval of Mrs. Biewer to be more detailed and clarify each part.

The Biewer Terrier has evolved away from the Yorkshire Terrier and is now a breed of its own. We no longer call them ¢€“Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pon.

Mr. and Mrs. Biewer kept a close reign on the Biewer breeding programs
in Germany, so their quality breeding dogs were hard to come by and quite costly. Mr. Biewer died in 1997, and his wife Gertrud Biewer discontinued her breeding program shortly thereafter.
In Nov. of 2007 Mrs. Biewer agreed to a meeting with representatives of the Biewer Terrier Club of America, Inc. at which time she shared important information about the early development of the breed, and the trials and errors they had gone through to reach their goal. The BTCA shared what they were doing since the arrival of the Biewers in America and the trials and tribulations

they were going through.

Mrs. Biewer is in full support of what the BTCA is doing for the breed and became a member to help with the development of the breed in America. We are in constant contact, keeping her abreast the advancements of the breed and have developed a close friendship through it all. Together we have been better able to educate the public about the history of the Biewer Terrier.

Her knowledge of the early problems incurred in the development of the Biewer breed has been invaluable in our breeding programs.

The members of the Biewer Terrier Club of America are committed to breeding Biewer to Biewer exclusively. Although the Biewer is a direct cousin to the Yorkshire Terriers, the Biewer Terrier is established as a breed of it„¢s own. We are not to be confused with the parti colored Yorkshire Terriers.

The majority of the club member breeders have been breeding Yorkies
for over 10 to 20 years, some 30 years and are quite knowledgeable with the
health issues associated with the Yorkshire Terrier breed and other small breed dogs in general. This experience is invaluable when it comes to breeding, whelping and caring for the dogs.

Before acquiring their Biewer Terriers our breeders conducted extensive research on this breed in order to produce the healthiest, best quality
Biewer offspring possible. We have a variety of top champion bloodlines
amongst ourselves and will be working together to ensure that we are not breeding the same lines too closely. We have been involved with many
different research programs in the past couple of years and have been working closely with Veterinarians that specialize in reproduction and breeding along with Scientists from MARS Veterinary.

We are honored to have Dr. Cynthia Fuller Ph D., a pioneer in molecular genetics join our team. Her PhD. dissertation research involved discovery of a whole additional repertoire of antibody genes in wild mice, as opposed to inbred mice used for biomedical research. The relevance to this project is that she is able to evaluate the genetic polymorphisms within species, which is precisely what the breed differences among dogs represent.

After testing over 30 different lineages (over 100 dogs) to date, we have been able to show that we have a new and distinct breed which is the Biewer Terrier. With the knowledge learned from the many tests conducted and the seminars we have attended, we have made decisions that we feel will better our breeding programs and help us produce the healthiest most beautiful Biewer Terriers possible.

We are proud to be a part in the development of this remarkable new breed, the Biewer Terrier and we welcome everybody to become involved in this exciting part of its history. Aside from the mandatory DNA testing required on breeding dogs, we are encouraging everyone to have the Mars test done also so that we will be better able to pair our breeders and to ensure retention of maximum diversity.

ARBA, American Rare Breed Association, has accepted the Biewer Terrier as a rare breed and the BTCA, Inc. as the National breed club for the Biewer Terrier in America. We will be showing with ARBA under the standard that they have accepted for our breed and will also exhibit with the IABCA International shows

Our long-term goal is to take the appropriate stepsthat we can exhibit as our own unique breed at AKC shows under the standard that best fits our exquisite Biewer Terrier.

General Appearance is that of an elegant longhaired tri colored Toy Terrier with the hair parting down the middle and hanging straight and evenly on both sides of the dog, as though a comb had been used to part the hair from the nose to the end of the body. The back is level, with height at shoulders being equal to height of the rump. Although the outline of the dog gives the appearance of a square, the body length can be slightly longer than the overall height. The tail is carried high over the body in a teacup handle fashion and covered with a long flowing plume. The Biewer Terrier has a lighthearted whimsical, child like attitude. Although mischievous at times, they are obedient and make a loyal companion. Head is slightly rounded with a moderate stop. The muzzle is approximately one-third the length of the head. Bite can be level or scissor bite. Nose is to be completely black. Eyes are medium sized and either round or almond shaped, with an intelligent expression looking straight ahead. The rims are dark in color. Ears are small, V shaped, upright, moderately wide set and covered with hair. They are set to the back of the skull and their base is level with the eyes. Tips should be shaved. Body is fine to medium boned with a good level top line. Height at the shoulders is the same as the height at the rump. Length of the body can be slightly longer than the height of the dog. The chest comes to the elbows with a good width. The rib cage is moderately sprung with the underline being slightly tucked up and a short but strong loin. Front legs must be absolutely straight, muscular and covered with hair. Hind legs are straight when viewed from behind and stifles are slightly bent when viewed from the side. Feet are as round as possible, with white or black nails. Tail is carried high over the body in a teacup handle fashion and covered with a long flowing plume. Length must go to the stifles or longer. Coat is long and flowing with a soft silky texture. Hair is straight and without an undercoat and should be at least 3/4 to the ground. Head fall is tied up into a single ponytail on top of the head and may be left hanging freely or put into a topknot. Head coloring is (Blue/Black, White, Gold/Tan); (Blue/Black, Gold/Tan); (Gold/Tan, White) in good symmetry. Hair coloring on back is blue or black and white. Amounts of each color are of personal preference with no dominating patterns. Chest, Stomach, Legs and Tip of the Tail is absolutely white. The white from the chest should come up the neck to cover the chin. Temperament of the Biewer Terrier is intelligent, loyal and very devoted to their human family. They have a fun loving, child like attitude that makes them a great companion for all ages. Weight is four to eight pounds.
Faults are a roach or rounded back; brown, gold or tan anywhere on the body, legs, or tail; pale nostrils; floppy ears; over eight lbs.

The Biewer Terrier is quickly working its way into the hearts of Americans everywhere. With it„¢s lighthearted, whimsical; child like attitude, this tri-colored Toy Terrier is gaining popularity with dog lovers everywhere. Equally as good with children as he is with other dogs of all sizes, the Biewer Terrier is a loyal and fast friend to all he considers part of his family. Although every dog has his own unique and special personality, as a breed, the Biewer Terrier is confident, happy, fun loving and even tempered. Generally speaking, Biewers are not noisy or especially difficult in any particular way.

Above article copied from the SMALLHOLDER.  www.sasmallholder.co.za   June 2017 edition page 37

  • Do not touch or pick up stray dogs, as their rabies vaccination status is unknown;
  • Always ask the owner before you pet a dog;
  • Keep their faces away from a dog's face;
  • Never bother a dog when it is eating, sleeping or with puppies;
  • Never bother a dog when it is in a car, behind a fence, or tied-up - even if it is a dog you know.

3. In the event of being bitten by a dog in a rabies outbreak area or suspected of having rabies:

  • Immediately wash the wound with soap and water or disinfectant for 10 minutes;
  • Immediately after washing the wound, go to your nearest clinic where rabies antiserum will be given and a course of vaccinations will be started. Being bitten by an animal with rabies will result in death unless preventative treatment is started immediately;

How often should my pet be vaccinated?

In these window periods, puppies/kittens are especially vulnerable to infectious viruses/bacteria.

Does vaccination guarantee that my animals will not get sick? No.

1) Vaccination protects against the common strains of disease. There are strains in the environment which your pet can get that are not in the vaccine.
2) Your pet is susceptible if he/she is immune compromised from malnutrition, parasites or stress.
3) Your pet is vulnerable when he/she is vaccinated when incubating a disease.

Thank you to ROGZ PET INSURANCE for passing on this valuable information to all Puppy/Dog owners

The Importance of Having your Pet Vaccinated

How often should my pet be vaccinated?

Adverse Effects

1) Hypersensitivity (the face will swell)
2) Anaphylaxis
3) Fever, lethargic, poor appetite
4) Eye discharge

If any of the above occur, contact your vet immediately.

Diseases against which your pets are vaccinated:

Dogs:

DHPPi
* Distemper virus (affects the nose, eyes and nervous system)
* Hepatitis virus (affects the liver in puppies)
* Para-influenza virus (lung disease)

Puppy
* 6 to 8 weeks - DHPPi
* 3 months - DHPPi and Rabies
* 4 months - DHPPi and Rabies

BEWARE....

Joyce

OUR BIEWER TERRIERS....
Just a snippet of info regarding them.....
Our IMPORTS are all from national and international Champions in America, we did not go to the trouble of importing to bring in sub standard dogs....
We do not sell to any breeder, we have our reasons for this...
We are very proud that we own top quality, Biewer terriers all dna tested to prove the parentage of these dogs (sire & dam) and MARS tested to prove they are the genuine BIEWER TERRIER .......
Our dogs are all registered with The Biewer Terrier Club in America, the ONLY club worldwide that insists on proof of the purity of the biewer on hand prior to them accepting ANY biewer terrier (litter or individual dog or pup) to be registered with their club.....

Privacy policy adhered to.
